Description

The Lotus 72D was one of the outstanding Formula One cars of the early 1970s. It is best known for Emerson Fittipaldi, who drove for the Lotus team in the 1972 championship season. Externally, it looked lower, sharper and more modern than many of its competitors. The wedge-shaped bodywork, side radiators, internal brakes and compact layout were aimed at improving aerodynamics, balance and layout. It was powered by a 3.0-liter Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine developing about 420 hp at about 10,000 rpm and weighed about 550 kg.
On the track, the 72D was light, responsive, aerodynamically efficient for its time and demanding at the limit. It rewarded smooth and precise handling and had little tolerance for sudden movements. Its design helped lay the groundwork for the next generation of Formula 1 cars.
