Sotonbori—a central tourist district known for its nightlife and famous river (canal)—appears in the Yakuza game series and is based on the real-life Dotonbori district in Osaka, Japan. This project is a port to BeamNG of the location from the game Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Unfortunately, this map is slightly smaller than Kamurocho—it contains only a few urban ring roads. However, it is much better optimized, while retaining the atmosphere of other locations from the Yakuza series and avoiding becoming a static “screenshot map” with a single road. Essentially, this project serves as a testing ground for improving the porting tools developed by Car_Killer, in preparation for larger-scale projects. The main achievement is the accurate porting of multi-layered materials (signs, glowing elements), which previously caused UV unwrapping issues that were virtually impossible to fix manually. We are now much better prepared to create even larger and higher-quality ports (hint: Hawaii!), which may appear in the future.
The map features all the elements typical of such ports, as well as several cool new features: full-fledged night lighting and glowing objects (including all light source animations from the original game), optimized levels of detail (LOD) that look better than ever, and PBR materials taken from the original source files. In addition, all in-game objects (props), particles, sounds, and other details have been added—all to ensure the map looks and performs as well as possible (as far as BeamNG’s technical limitations allow).
