The LSPD’s CRASH (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) was an anti-gang unit established in 1973 to address the escalating gang violence and drug crimes in Los Santos. The unit maintained squads in each division and employed tough, aggressive enforcement tactics against street gangs.

However, in the late 1990s, the Mission Row Division’s CRASH unit was exposed in a systemic corruption scandal. An anonymous tip revealed that officers led by Tenpenny, Pulaski, and Hernandez had engaged in a series of serious crimes including fabricating evidence, framing suspects, using excessive force, and colluding with drug traffickers. Dozens of officers were implicated, over a hundred criminal cases were overturned, and the city government paid substantial compensation as a result.

The Mission Row scandal dealt a devastating blow to the LSPD’s credibility. CRASH was officially disbanded in 2000, with its functions taken over by the newly established GANG UNIT.

(I don’t know if real‑life LAPD crash unit officers actually wear this kind of shoulder patch; there’s very little reference material available.)
