Description

This mod brings a GTA VI-inspired character switching experience to GTA V, allowing you to play as two configurable characters, including custom peds, while keeping the other character alive and active somewhere in the world.

Features:

Switch between two completely configurable character models using the character-switch menu.
Configure both characters through the .ini file
Randomly start as either character
Hold X on keyboard to open the character selection menu
Use Q to switch the selected character
Release X to perform the switch

Supports both nearby and distant character switching

Character switching changes depending on how far apart your two characters are.

Nearby characters use a fast, cinematic transition with bright white and orange visual effects.

Distant characters use a dramatic sky transition

The close/far transition is determined automatically based on the distance between the two characters. (Configurable in the .ini default being 170m)

The inactive character doesn’t simply disappear when you switch away they remain in the world and can:

Walk around
Wander through the city
Drive vehicles
Perform ambient activities
Continue driving after you switch characters
Become involved in police situations
Exist independently until you encounter them again

Companion System:

When your two characters encounter each other, they can behave as companions.
Depending on the situation, they can:

Walk together
Follow each other
Get into vehicles together
Ride together
Fight alongside each other
Participate in police pursuits
React to combat around them

Wanted & Police Behavior:

The inactive character can participate in police situations when the two characters are together.

They can do the following during pursuits and chases:

Fight alongside you
Engage hostile targets
Drive aggressively while wanted
Attempt to escape police (Sort of broken at the moment but working on fixing)
Ignore normal traffic behavior during pursuits

Wanted behavior is designed to make the two characters feel like they’re involved in the same situation rather than behaving like unrelated NPCs.

The inactive character has their own Companion map blip.

This allows you to open the map and see where your other character currently is, then travel to them.

Character Selection HUD

The mod features a custom GTA VI-inspired character selection interface featuring:

Character portraits (Supports custom peds as well)
Honor indicators (Honor will be available in the feature)
Keyboard/controller input glyphs
Character selection animations

Random Character & World Spawning

When the game starts, the mod can randomly select which configured character you play as.

The other character is spawned elsewhere in the world rather than directly beside you, allowing you to eventually encounter them naturally.

Spawn behavior can also place characters in different situations, including vehicles and ambient locations.

Death & Respawn

The mod also handles character death and respawning so the dual-character system can continue after the player dies.

After death, the system allows GTA V’s normal hospital respawn behavior to take place before restoring your configured character and returning the other character to the world.

The companion also arrives at the hospital with a ride for the player to hop into.

Configuration

The two playable characters are configured through CharacterSwap.ini.

This allows you to use different GTA V peds instead of being restricted to the normal story characters.
