Description
Zangerhausen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Welcome to Zangerhausen — a map based on my hometown in central Germany. This is my first map project and my attempt to recreate the main roads and recognizable parts of Sangerthausen in BeamNG.drive as accurately as possible. The map focuses primarily on the town itself and its main roads, including many specific real-life locations, stores, landmarks, and other details inspired by their real-world counterparts. About 99% of the buildings were created specifically for this map, including many small details: signs, speed cameras, graffiti, local bus stops, and other custom objects.
Please note that this was also my first experience mapping for BeamNG. Because of this, some roads and road markings may be incomplete, inaccurate, or simply not look very good. The AI traffic isn’t perfect either: some road definitions and driving directions are incorrect, and AI cars may behave strangely or drive too fast in certain parts of the city. I created this project using the BeamNG Mapping Tool.
PERFORMANCE
Zangerhausen is a very large and resource-intensive map with a huge number of buildings, objects, custom assets, and vegetation. Especially in densely built-up areas and when looking toward the city center, you may experience significant FPS drops. A powerful PC is strongly recommended.
Recommended for the best experience:
16 GB VRAM or more
A powerful processor
Sufficient RAM
An SSD is recommended due to the map’s size
The mod itself is also quite large due to the amount of custom content included.
Despite the remaining issues, I decided to release the map—having spent a tremendous amount of time on it—rather than leave my first mapping project unfinished.
MODDING AND IMPROVEMENTS
Since the last update, I’ve been facing serious performance issues. Even shortly before the update, I was already experiencing significant FPS drops in many areas of the map, and the situation has become even more noticeable since then. For this reason, I’ve decided to temporarily halt active work on the project. I’d love to add much more content and make the map even more realistic and detailed, but with the current performance issues, that’s no longer feasible for me.
If anyone here is knowledgeable about BeamNG mapping, map building, performance optimization, or similar topics and knows how to improve this map’s performance, I’d be very grateful for any help. I’ve reached a point where I simply don’t have the time or technical knowledge needed to optimize the map on my own. That’s exactly why I’m now specifically seeking help from experienced people who might know where the main performance bottlenecks are and what can be done to improve them. This is also one of the main reasons why I decided to post the project here on the forum. As far as I’m concerned, the project is more than welcome to be continued, improved, or refined by others.
INSTALLATION
Place the ZIP file in the BeamNG mods folder:
C:/Users/…/092;AppData\Local\BeamNG\BeamNG.drive\current\mods
If you encounter any issues after playing for a while, clear the BeamNG cache and restart the game.
Enjoy exploring Zangerhausen!
Notes for Version 1.2:
Use the Vulkan and DirectX 11 renderers; otherwise, the game won’t work (launch the game with the Vulkan renderer; you can change the DirectX settings in Steam).
The first load may take up to 10 minutes; please be patient and do not click on the loading screen while it’s loading, even if it appears to be frozen.
If your PC lacks VRAM and has a weak processor, you’ll most likely encounter serious performance issues. I won’t be working on performance optimization anymore. I don’t know much about LODs, and my buildings don’t have collision meshes.
In version 1.2, I performed significant optimization: the draw distance was reduced from 25,000 to 600 meters, which noticeably improved performance and reduced the severity of the severe FPS drops seen in version 1.0. However, the map is still very resource-intensive, and FPS drops are still noticeable, especially in urban areas. I also reworked the collision models for several buildings that players could previously drive right through. Since many of my custom buildings still lack separate collision meshes or LODs, the collision detection on some objects is, unfortunately, still not perfect. In some cases, cars can still get stuck in walls. I’ve added several new, highly detailed buildings to give the city its authentic charm. Overall, version 1.2 is a clear improvement over version 1.0 in terms of stability and performance, though there’s still room for further optimization.
By the way:
The strange-looking “Hohe Linde” mountain, known locally as Schachthalde, is an artificial hill approximately 144 meters high. Built from the waste rock of Thomas Müntzer’s former copper mine, its distinctive conical shape serves as a striking reminder of the city’s mining history.
